Having seasons here on chess.com

What do ya think of having a season with all participating groups and teams play a season and have the top half of teams advancing to the playoffs.

guitarhester

That sounds really cool actually. I like the idea of a chess league kinda thing. Perhaps if the site doesn't organize it we could build a league of groups? Each group would have a set number of players and a manager. There could be rating restrictions to make sure the teams are matched well, or perhaps the teams could be split up by geographical location that play in the league.

I really like this idea. Any other opinions?

guitarhester,

I do agree that rating restritions should be place. No one should have to play anyone that over or under 100 points of them. Say I was 1,000 rating then I should only play people who are in the 900 to 1,100 range nothing more, than less that way everyone playing would have a real chance of winning there match. Also would like to see MVP's for regualr season and playoffs. I would like to have MVP's for every 100 points. Meaning that 800 MVP, 900 MVP, 1,000 MVP all the to the top 2,200, 2,300, 2,400.

Sounds like a good idea, but it also sounds like a lot of work involved.  When would the "season" start and end?  Would there be an "off-season," and if so how long would it be?  Regardless, when all the details get ironed out, you can count me in.

great idea.

rating restrictions - likely to be a tricky one if it's a long season, might fluctuate too much to keep opponents evenly matched.

No because let's say the season is 20 games long.  For the first one might be rated 1,200 and he wins. Now he's at 1,300 by 2nd game of the season he could only play people that are 1,200 to 1,300.  One would have time to set up the matches correctly. Because during the season ratings of players will go up and down that why before one could lock in a match to play  season game they would have to make sure that the rating restriction is keep and for those you break this rule it would be automatic foreit, so for teams trying to advance into the playoffs I don't think this would happen too much. However on the same token once a season match has been lock in correctly let say it's Sunday and time to lock into a season match and he lock a players who at the time was 1,200 and by Monday he wins some games and his rating jumps up now you have 1,100 player and our guy who's now jumped from 1,200 to 1,350 the match will contuine if the 1,350 player teams can't find replacement that meets the "rating restrictions" rule than the match must continue however is there's replacement player than he must play or lose the match.

Great idea, this has my vote.

But the "world league" is only for teams not both teams and groups and we want both to play.

ADK

I like the idea, BUT what if we want to play out of season OR after elimination?

Great idea. Keep me in the loop. Thanks

Like the idea. Could there include a live chess version as well?

Well, nice to see there's some interest here. What I had in mind was more akin to the US Chess league. Check out the wiki.

In my mind the planning is all pretty much laid out there;

  1. pick some team captains (probably premium members) and a league director
  2. the team captains hold tryouts for players and form clubs out of the winners
  3. the director gets together with the captains and builds a play schedule
  4. mascots, t-shirts and popcorn
  5. ????????
  6. profit

Of course this a huge amount of involvement from 100+ people for a loooong period of time. Applying the axiom of procrastination I think this wouldn't last for a whole season without some site staff help.

nqi I think has the right idea. Live chess would probably be better for this kind of highly organized thing because players would all get together on a certain night for league play and challenge the other teams to massive battle royal. When the dust clears the ratings from those live games would determine the placement of the teams. hm. The more I write the more I think I'm describing club challenges. just between more than 2 clubs and with live chess.

thoughts?

Since you're doing a "Season" like in professional sports, and designing a play-off system, why not make if 30 teams, like most professional sports leagues?  2 conferences, 3 divisions per conference, 5 teams per division, 4 rounds of playoffs.
