I'm pretty terrible at chess. Anybody have some tips?

backrankbrawler

Hi!

In general, here are three things you can do to improve:

1. Try to study your games (especially your losses). Post them in the forums for assistance if you're not sure what's going on. But it's important to try to find out yourself what's going on.

2. Read chess books and learn from the masters. You can check out my recommended book list on my site: http://www.betterchesstraining.com/2014/05/chess-books-for-beginnners.html

3. Do tactical problems to sharpen your eye. The Tactics Trainer here is great, but also from books. Check my list out again for the book I recommend.

If you do these three things regularly, your results will get better.

I hope that helps.

Bryan

Chesstempo.com.

Follow the principles and play "correct" chess, even if playing less correct (1. h4 2. h5 and such) gives you less wins.

And......listen to your grandfather (sometimes)!Cool

LOL.

Victor: What is correct chess?

join a otb chess club and let them beat you till you are good. of course if it is a good club they will tell you the errors you make and make you better.

Keep playing higher rated players when you can.  Depending on which opponents you choose to play, you would do one of 2 things - either win all the time, or get better.  That goes for anybody.

otb stands for over the board and is real life chess a real club not online. you must have a chess club where you live. the other members will help you analyze your games and give you tips that will make you better.

they might beat you a lot to start with but most club members will tell the errors you make and make you better.

Okay thanks.

actualnotanewbie

I would but we don't really have that kinda time. However Noswals suggested I buy a chess book and I also play my siblings.

what made me a better chessplayer. (not that I am that good )

chessmaster 10 /11 if you buy this chess software. you will get a great chess course by Josh Waitzkin go through all of the courses.

and of course chess.com get a diamond membership

tactics trainer. chess mentor, and a lot of great chess videos.

the problem may be that you may have too many sources of information.

if you decide to read the book. don't use any other source of learning while reading the book cover to cover. do not watch another chess video or something not related to the book.  Too much information may do more damage than good.

I think this is a great advice that I got from one in the club at the time I really wanted learn, I used too many sources ...information overflow.

he stopped me and told me read this book(it was a book by GM Bent Larsen) but the title isn't that important the most important lesson is not to be an information junkie.

Okay Bobby, I'll give it a shot but remember I'm only 14. Plus my parents are on a tight budget.

However we're going to a homeschool sale this week so I'll be keeping an eye out for any chess books.

I thought you were the older man on the picture.

you can always borrow books in the library for free I guess there is plenty of chess books. but use only one at a time.

actualnotanewbie

Yeah I'll do that too.

Anyone else think this whole thread might just be a wind-up?  Just saying...

At 14 you will improve rapidly just by playing.

So if you like the game and get fun from playing you will do fine.

Play a few games at a longer time control (in Online chess) as well as quick games (in live chess). A way to get a bit of extra fun from that, and to find worthwhile opponents is to join one of the older and larger groups and play in matches.
