A swiss tournament is comprised of  X  amount of rounds.   Everyone is entitled to play all rounds.   A knockout tournament is different, ie; when you lose you are out of the tournament.

A Swiss tournament rank orders everyone according to Rating.   Then the first Round either the top half plays the bottom half  or  the top quarter plays the 3rd quarter as the 2nd quarter ranked players are paired with the 4th quarter.    In each Round the pairings try to pit players of equal scores together.    For example, to make Round 4 pairings, they tournament director first pairs people with 3 Wins against each other, then 2 wins and 1 draw.....etc.  down to those with all losses.   There are general rules for Swiss pairings and the tournament director has the final say as to how he does it.

A swiss tournament does NOT limit what opening strategies are employed.

Good luck in your tournament experiences and you should surely try Swiss tournaments as they are the most popular in USA.
