Don't play chess. Play Russian pawns. It is like chess but with no pieces. Just the king and pawns. I think you would learn a lot more that way with something simple.
Another game, have a king, 5 pawns, and knight against king, 5 pawns and a night.
There are many simple games you can play and master. Learn each simple combination, and then build your way up.
