Here's an interesting position for your favorite engine:

White to play.  Which of the following is true:

(A)  Black has a huge edge.
(B)  Black has a big edge.
(C)  Black has a small edge.
(D)  The position is relatively equal.
(E)  White has a small edge.
(F)  White has a big edge.
(G)  White has a huge edge.

Phylar

White has a checkmate opp. on g7, more piece mobility, is safe behind Black's own pieces, and even has light threats around the Black King.

So (F) White has a small edge. I want to say (E) but  believe that would be technically incorrect. Now if it was Black's move, then things should be different.

But other opinions would be great. I am not 1600+ yet for a reason!

seems to me Nf4(!?!?) is a forced win for white threatening mate via the h file i just look at this position so im not sure..

Yeah I have a UCI somewhere but I know it would tell me some rubbish before having a heart attack.

I will go with 1. Nh5g7. It either ends in a draw or slightly better position for white. Doesn't matter what evaluation engine gives on each move.

Very good, nilshero.  I also believe it's a mate in 14.

I listed seven different choices to answer the question, and depending upon your choice of engine, and how long you let this engine look at the position, EVERY answer could have been a valid response!

If you let a strong engine look at the position long enough, the answer is G... White has a huge edge.  In fact, Houdini reports a mate in 14, beginning with 1.Rh3.

However, if you let an engine look at it for just a few seconds, then (A) is correct!  For example, Houdini initially evaluated the position as Black has a huge edge!  Granted, it did change this evaluation from (A) to (B) after just a few seconds.

And then, 20 seconds later or so, (C) was the correct answer... and then the answer was (D) about a minute later.

And then slowly, ever so slowly, Houdini's evaluation climbed and climbed and climbed.  White had a small edge and then a big edge and then a huge edge... and then a forced mate.

I wanted to list another choice - (H) White has a forced mate.  But if I did that I think I would have given eveything away.

Houdini's main line is this:

31 [M14]  1. Rh3 Bxf5 2. exf5 Rxb3 3. axb3 Qa5 4. Qh4 Rb8 5. fxg6 Qe1+ 6. Qxe1 d2 7. gxh7+ Kh8 8. Qxd2 Rg8 9. hxg8=Q+ Kxg8 10. Nf4 e4 11. Qa5 Nc2 12. Qd8+ Bf8 13. Nd5 Na1 14. Ne7#  (9079.87)

It's not often you come across a position where the score changes so drastically, from one side winning to the other side winning.

Fun stuff.

crafty showed +10 advantage for white immediately. surely houdini couldn't be worse.

MrEdCollins

laugh, are you sure you're reading that correctly?

My Crafty, which I believe is the the latest version, (23.5) shows about a +10 advantage (actually, 9.65) almost immediately... but for Black.

johnsmith1928

hmm, i stand corrected. the advantage was for black. the advantage goes down to about +3.5 by move 2. by move 3 crafty shows instead mate in 8 for WHITE (!) after about 5 secs of analysis. this position is more interesting than at first glance.

remember analysing an opening by houdini that was weird in the same way. but can't remember which. white sacs the a-rook and then takes the black queen three moves later or something like that. the weird thing is that houdini can't see this even after a couple mins of analysis before certain moves are made.

Can anyone tell me a free engine where I can analyze positions and learn opening lines & variations from games pgn collections. Please help.

MrEdCollins

Stockfish 3, Houdini 1.5, Rybka 2.2, Critter 1.6a, Crafty 23.4

Bouquet 1.6, Komodo 3, Gull 2.1, Spike 1.4

You will need a GUI to go with it.  Scid vs PC, Tarrasch, WinBoard, or Arena are just a few of the many choices you have.

My Fritz says Qg4-h4 or Rf3-h3

Would be cool to see what this computer comes up with: http://cluster.rybkachess.com/
