It's a Portable Game Notation. (a standard plain text format for recording chess games).

If you want to get serious with chess, I recommend getting a diamond membership on chess.com. This way, you can do puzzles and lessons and get better. If you are new to chess, I would also definitely recommend doing tactics, Lichess has a lot of tactic tools and you can create a free account there. Overall however, playing chess on chess.com has more accurate ratings so it closely matches your Over The Board (OTB) rating.

He hasn't got the right idea at all. Just start slowly. Try to learn a few basic check-mating techniques, say if you have a king and queen against an opponent's king and then king and rook against king. Learn a few openings. See how games develop with both sides moving their pieces off the starting squares, trying to make a strong point near the centre of the board, ensuring your king is safe. Practise being aware of when an opponent has left a piece that you can take and try not to do the same by always checking your moves for mistakes.

Start slowly and ignore people telling you to do puzzles etc. Learn to concentrate. Don't play fast chess at first. All the moves in half an hour is ok. Hope that helps.
