every opponent starts g6. is this needed for the shrimp?

Yep AICzervik. You need ...g6 early though not necessarilly on move one.
Basically the Shrimp Gambit is an exchange sac of a1 rook.
I didn't delve too much into this and it looks a bit crazy after the first 3 or 4 turns ... but on the other hand, it also looks like a fun idea to explore. I've been trying to find more positions and gameplay where sacrificing a pawn, or even two ends up gaining a lot later.
