Exactly, I think people just jump to her defence without actually seeing the pairings. It is pretty ironic that she has reservations against playing her fellow women players in a tournament where she failed to demonstrate her 'clear superiority' over them.

GMs complain about pairings all the time. Usually when they get 2 blacks in a row. A responsible arbiter just ignores them.

I can understand her. It was just frustrated reaction, like it can happen in any Sport.

But it s not only about woman or man. Sie played rivals, who knew her game well.

And it depends alot on how the organizer threated her after she complained.

Also, there where other wierd Pairings. like Husband played his wife etc. In Open tournamets there is sometimes stuff going on behind the sceenes. People draw or lose to countrymen. and so on.

More proof that she's overrated and never will be as good as Judit.

Wow is that what happened? I thought the pairings were determined by the tournament organisers. If the male participants of the tournament were manipulating the pairings then that really is surprising!

The program is publicly available. The pairings are publicly available. If the pairings were incorrect either Yifan herself or someone should point it out pretty quickly.

Otherwise nothing to complain about. She lost a few rating points against the opposition she apparently considered unfit to face her.

Woman are not weaker. You just have one Rating. man or Woman.

Someone with even worse matchups, but it is unclear what exactly he can complain about:

sexism is bias based on one's sex. isn't she exhibiting sexism by saying she feels "slighted" by having to play women? what if a male player complained he wasn't being challenged because he had to play female players? I can only imagine. She should have kept playing and at the end of the tournament the best player would have been rewarded. Isn't that what women want? equality w/o regard to one's sex? She did not do women's rights any favors. just saying....

She never says she wasn't challenged or that her opponents were too weak though. (I implied the same thing earlier, but just being snarky.) Her complaint is that the pairings were manipulated (there are rules about what kinds of pairings are allowed).

It could be said that assuming that she was upset because women are worse than men in chess is unconscious sexism on the listener's part

Somtimes you are very unlucky in Pairings in open tournaments. And it can seem unfair to you. She had to Play mostly rivals who knew her game well. Also 3 Ukranian Girls in a row. That feels like playing against a Team.

Her complaint was that the pairings were manipulated, which is against the rules. She might, for example, imagine it's a slight against her by the organizers in which case it doesn't matter how she regards her opponents as long as she might imagine the organizers have low regard for her opponents.

She did play the tournament, this was the last round IIRC.

Considering how easily something like this can be checked (and looking for myself I think that at least the first 5 rounds were correct - where she played against 4 women) I doubt the organisers manipulated any of the pairings.

I think Nakamura (his father???) also lodged a complaint about the leader getting 6 whites and 4 blacks. Again easy enough to check (and again it looks like the only players he could play were on 7 points and he had either played them or they themselves were due black - and so he gets benefit of extra white as the leader).

Right now it looks to me like her complaint was completely unfounded as the organisers seemed to be using the correct pairings.

I really hope I'm missing something and Yifan was in the right, but if not this is a ridiculous protest - unless she expects to have the pairings manipulated so she does not play against women?

Yes for me ist not a big deal. Fot others it is a big deal.

As i understand it she (and the Players at her Points Standing) was out of chances for Prize Money.

Maybe many here have never played any open tournaments. Sometimes Players who havent a Chance to win a prize just travel home. The last round was alway famous for fast draws or forfeit games.

Here in europe i saw alot of worse things. They Play in Teams or they delibratly lose Rating so they can Play lower rated Trournaments. If they have no Chance anymore they just travel off.

But thats the Thing. You cant prove them to do this things and it just seems unfair to you.

Also in Gibraltar there were other complains from nakamura against Anton who had 6 times the White pieces.

So maybe hou yifans reaction is a big deal and wrong

But at least her reaction was honest. She could easily just Play a bad game and go home. nobody could prove it. As did probably many Players in the last round.
