its all good man. i took 20 years off from chess. started at 600 november 15 and worked up to 1100. john bartholomew has good content also. watching his stuff helped me be more positional /defensive. chessable is also a great resource for all aspects.

Chess.com is a very competitive website with a lot of elite players on it. Many of the greatest blitz players of all time play regularly on this site. So don't be discouraged if you find people significantly stronger than you.

So how does a 640 rapid rating compare? Well on this site, you're considered a "beginner". You're below average rating. You're familiar with all of the rules of chess and you know how the pieces move, you probably know a few basic tactical ideas too like what a pin or a fork is, but you struggle to implement these ideas consistently, and you regularly hang pieces.

If you played at a family gathering or with some stranger on the street, you'd probably win. But against serious competitive chess players, you're not quite there yet.

@KnightErrant97 geez man, do you honestly think that a young child would play at that level? Drop the superiority complex over a virtual rating.

It doesn’t matter what’s your rating, just play best game you can. When I look back 7-8 years ago, at my games when I was 1400-1500, first I notice that I clearly didn’t know main openings, but I knew principles of opening, i didn’t know important endgame techniques, but I knew basic endgame principles, I was making too many blunders and mistakes, but I had beautiful moments in which I was performing nice tactics, and even know I’m amazed how at 1400 I was able to make those moves.

It could happen the same for you, play your best games, enjoy, and maybe some day later when you look back, you notice that you played beautiful games, even though you had many blunders, you had beautiful moments (strategical, tactical, end game, ...)

I've been playing obsessively for the last two years estimate 20,000 games (I've had previous accounts.......  but only 1 at time) and can't get away from 1000!  People on this site are GOOD!  No denying it.  I too started at 800 and have only gotten a little better.  Don't get discouraged.  Just play for fun and don't get too hung up on your rating.  It's just another number.

good handle, good comment.   the rating does help find you a good opponent for your level, whatever it is.  nothing not to like.  right, play for fun.

So TH.  Why bother spending so much time on Chess.com?

hey! don't worry, you can beat higher rated people too! Like how I beat a 804 person in a tournament today! you can do it too!

Having played chess for a combined period of a year (several decades ago) and having joined a couple chess.com a couple of weeks ago my rating is now around 630-650. If the standard ELO rating for beginners is about 800 this means that I am playing to a standard worse than an absolute beginner! The weird thing is I have played a few good games with people around the 600-700 range and each of us seem to have a grasp of the basics of the game and tactics - eg planning ahead with defence and attack and implementing forks, pins etc and knowing how to finish. Is the rating on chess.com different or are all if us at my level simply catastrophically awful?

Beginners should be below 500 rating. 800 rating is close to average, considering 900 blitz rating in chess.com is average.
