How can bullet be so streaky?

I know streaks happen, but how can this be so extreme?

I had a winning streak so I went from 1300+ to 1500+. Won 10 games in a row, despite of opponents being higher rated due to my rating increase.

Now it's losing streak, lost 17 out of 20 previous games. Before I lost 20+ games in a row. My playing strength right now is propably around 900.

I am not good at bullet in general. I don't use premove and usually resign if for example lose a piece. But that is constant.

It also seems that the lower rated my opponents are, the worse I do.

These swings seem to come from nowhere, you're doing good and then suddenly can't do anything.

Very recognizable,

I'm on a losing streak myself now (in bullet).  Lost some 200 points won 50 back, then lost 80 more or so.  I always play rated matches, mainly in tournaments.  Mostly i cba about my rating, but this time it messed with my head a bit... Maybe my head was messed up or already (i've been busy) a bit and then i lost due to that.  I also lost 3 matches in a row due to blundering my queen.  Then i was tilted all the way and perfected the losing streak.

I'll be off now to sacrifice two virgins and take a dump in the neighbors' mailbox.   Because after all, sharing is caring.  angry.png wink.png

I always lose in rapid chess because I get exited about that ten second increment and either I lose on tactics or I lose by checkmate and I usually resign.

I seem to not get into streaks that often, but rather go on something like "two steps forward, 1 step backward" (or vice versa).

Tennis is the same. It's all about how much mental energy you have compared with the other person.

That is a good point. I realize mental energy counts, bullet (at my level) is mostly about whether you see beginner level threats instantly.

The strange thing is, it's about more than being alert. Right now I am practically asleep, having slept 3 hours last night. I just played few games while eating and listening to a podcast, but my play wasn't as bad as yesterday.

Go figure.

I just realized another thing.

I am around 1550 OTB, but obviously much weaker at bullet.

When I play opponents in the range of 1300-1400, I struggle with motivation. I can see my opponents play crude beginner-like moves, but obviously my bullet skills are too weak to actually win the games. Then I just start blundering mates in one, or hanging my pieces.

I had another bad run, and dropped to 1300s. I think it's time to throw in the towel, I can't mud wrestle myself back to 1500+ again.

Bullet is a weird game!

Streaks are common in bullet for 1 reason I guess, it's easy to win. In bullet, go for tricks and traps and mates and you can get a winning streak no problem. Trouble is keeping it.

Bullet IS a weird game! To get better, you just play more and more and more games! You eventually spot "patterns" in your opponents after you play them a couple of times, so just take advantage of that!

Yeah, that propably works the best.

It is pretty difficult to go against my instincts though...I am not used of going for unsound attacks or silly threats.

Now I also understand why bullet can be bad for your slow chess, because in order to do optimize results, you must play badly on purpose.

Wait until you play 1 min bullet games over the board and you can count the number of flying pieces all over the board.

Also remember that you are always facing two opponents at any moment. The second opponent is "time". You are always playing against the clock as well.

Also, imagine coming 1 hour 30 minutes late on your 2 hour examination and taking your examination. You will definitely panick as well.
