I find 30 min games just out of my reach some times. But in the long run of my chess life I'd like to play 4 to 6 hour games in which I could battle on strong.

Read through Kotov's Think Like A Grandmaster, and actually do all of the exercises until you see the solutions through all the analysis tree branches.

It isn't easy.

practice! is the obvious answer

but helpful thoughts are:

  • solve involved tactical puzzles
  • play out critical endgames
  • Practice analyzing a position deeply

the last thought I think it is the best and in the end, you simply Must do a better job at analyzing a position deeply if you want to play strong FIDE standard chess.

myself, I find G30 perfect!  its my natural speed.  this might be due to the amount of time I've spent playing this time control.

if you've played many thousands of  blitz games, that could become a real barrier to good OTB performance.

do tactics trainer problems and for each puzzle, calculate until you see the solution all the way to the end. Never make 'hopeful' moves. When you get them wrong, go back and try again without looking at the solution. As your TT rating goes up, so too will your observational skill. (this, I believe, is what you mean when you say 'focus and attention span' Surely it's not that you aren't paying attention when you play, it's more likely that you aren't seeing all of the threats and opportunities despite the fact that you are focusing. Doing TT problems in this way will make you better at it. This is working for me (slowly but surely)..

You need to be physically fit ,especially if you're going to play long tournament games. so physical exercise should be part of your preparation

There are plenty of excercises and techniques for this.  Search on the internet.

I have a problem with my attention span too. What helped me was taking

I have a brain injury that specifically affects my attention. My suggestion is to play longer games. First look and see all of the obvious moves.  Then after you think you have found your best & obvious move, look for the less obvious. Compare them & then  don’t just move, even if you find what you think is the perfect move. Examine the entire board, and relook for threats you missed the first time.  Also If you have problems specifically wt attention, I have found that using a little bit of cannabis always helps me to focus and stay on target, and brings me more into the game. Yes I know my rating is rather low to be excepting advice from, but TBI’s change from day to day. Last week my rating was a lot higher, and so was I. happy.png

For quite a fair proportion of players, however, this is quite impractical.
