use losing as a motivating factor to improve

Get used to it, and use it as a tool to improve.

“Get used to it” is an inaccuracy. You must expect to lose a certain percentage of your games. If you expect an occasional loss, you will not be devastated by it because you will have expected it. No matter how high your rating gets, you will still lose sometimes. Expect it.

Get yourself hypnotized so that even when you lose, you think you won.

Losing should bother you A LOT, and like daxypoo said, you should use it as a motivating factor.

If you lose, rage at your opponent in the chat and smash your computer.

Step one : Grab your mouse firmly. Step two : smash your mouse through your screen. Step three : cry.

@zanti_misfit No, he isn't. I looked at the game. The endgame is a draw but you had less time. What you do here is against the Terms of Service. I will report you if you keep doing this.

I think it was Bobby Bowden, the famous Florida State football coach, who said that everybody loves to win. But to be champions, you must really hate to lose.

In chess, I've seen three basic responses to losing:

  • The losing player gets angry and quits
  • The losing player doesn't get angry, and accepts the loss
  • The losing player gets angry and vows to win next time.

Of those three basic responses, only the third response will set you on the right path to improvement.

I have absolutely no problem with Carlsen's famous sulking after a loss. Fischer cried after he lost. Losing hurts. The important thing is how do you respond to the loss.

I don't think it's healthy to let losing bother you lot. That can lead to a very damaging mental state. The trick is to breathe and keep things in perspective. Everyone makes mistakes and loses games. Celebrate your wins and when you execute a plan well. And when you lose a game see what you can learn from it. This is coming from someone who loses A LOT
