Typically until the opening phase is over, so my back rank is clear, I've castled, and I end the prep by explaining some basic middlegame idea that's been established.

Now... whether I actually remember all that during a game... haha happy.png

Looking at some of my chessbase files (this is where I organize my prep) the great majority of them are between 10 and 15 moves.

In the semislav I know almost 700 variation with most of them being 4-6 moves long (from a particular point of the theory) which can take up to over 30 moves (usually they end at around 20 though)
Here's a sample of my 'long variation' I play this as black so I know most white's alternatives but only one black line:

My opening preparation is about 15 moves to be approximate.
