How did people get to stone league already?

true and the reason is someone thought 9 divided by 3= 15 divided by 10

thus disadvantaging rapid players

The most common Rapid time control is 10|0. My guess is that was used to set values.

It's hard to believe they're so incompetent that there isn't some reason. For example they might have stats that 10|0 games finish about as fast as we might expect 5|0 games to finish. At least at low ratings this makes sense, as people often choose longer time controls so that they can ignore the clock completely. In other words 10 minutes feels like an eternity, in other words they never come close to using all their time.

I was under the impression that the league concept was designed to promote activity, not to find a best player.

How about setting up a system to find a best player? Is that such a wacky crazy concept no one wants to do?

The rating system and the periodic tournament with only top-rated players would do that.  A league is an unnecessary complication and using it for that purpose would be like using only a hammer when bolting things together.  Everybody under 2000 or maybe 2300 or maybe 2600 could be ignored as they would simply be a distraction.

Complaining that a league doesn't find the best player is kind of like going to a carnival's shooting gallery and complaining that even though people can win prizes it doesn't find the Olympic Biathlon champion.

Or possibly that... statistically, 15|10 (and 30|0) games finish must faster than 10|0 games do at low ratings tongue.png

So you want to compare yourself to similarly rated people in similar time controls? Isn't that what ratings are for?

with 15|10, i can say only the most long and complex games have taken 20 mins

but i mean 3|0 should be able to finish before 6 mins and 1|0 before 2 mins enough to offset it right?

no, 10|0 just finishes faster than expected so they only give 15 pts?

whatever

also draws are 1/3 of wins and not 1/2 so scoring 50% in rapid may not give 7.5 pts per game

That plus making arenas valuable will tend to favor higher rated players, IMO.

Most masters don't bother with standard arenas because all the players are too weak to be any fun, but if you're farming trophies then they're perfect for long winning streaks.

Chesscom has more data than we do. They may just be setting bullet at 3-1-0 and then adjusting the rest based on the average times taken site wide. Just because a 10/0 game could take 20 minutes, and just because your games usually take 18 minutes, doesn't mean all do. The average is probably a lot lower.

Of course, this doesn't matter to most people... only people who will be maxing out their playing time trying to advance. In lower leagues you should be able to advance simply by playing a little every day.

#48, actually i think lower rated players will have more decisive games which is a +

also thats only when the high rated player is playing in a sea of low rated players and not face other high rated players

Ilampozhil25

#50 i made it to stone using that, and not much at all

That's a good point. Maybe that balances it outa bit, hmm.

Still, arenas give bonus points. In the last 2 or 3 leagues I assume no one who isn't farming arenas will advance.

SamyureWarrior I am not sure if you are trolling or acting dumb on purpose. Would you mind elaborating what exactly your issue is ?

It's a pretty simple concept. I will give you an example. Let's say you want bullet. You play 2 other people.

Bullet league 1

Player 1

Player 2

Player 3

Now, someone else wants to play Blitz.

Blitz League 1

Player 1

Player 2

Player 3

I like rapid, so please make a rapid league.

Rapid League 1

Player 1

Player 2

Player 3

Instead we have something like:

Player 1 blitz

Player 2 bullet

Player 3 blitz

Player 4 rapid

Player 5 rapid

Player 6 bullet

Player 7 blitz

Player 8 bullet

Player 9 rapid

Why jumble time controls? Next, why have rating differences?

That's stupid and makes no sense . Firstly people aren't going to have a single preference. They would like to play rapid / blitz / bullet according to their mood at any time of the day .

Secondly how does having people playing different time controls and people of different ratings in the same division become an issue ?

well only 3,3 and 1 will advance in the last 3 (well except legend, ofc) so yeah because thats obviously part of the meta and someone not following the meta will not get to top 3 in crystal or elite and definitely not top 1 in champion (top 1 lol)

Be in the top __% on Sunday (Sundays is when promotions happen).

The higher the league, the higher the %. For wood it's top 40%.
