How do GMs make money at chess?
I think books are probably daunting for a lot of players. Working one on one with a coach who can play against you and critique is a more attractive way to improve.

To win tournements, that they enter free or in many cases get paid to join. Many is also coach and playing for a club.

The difference between playing a strong GM or IM and playing Houdini or Rybka is that the human players can teach/explain things to you. The engines cannot teach/explain anything.

Chess is a great game & there is money to be made no doubt. What get's me mad is, theres not much publicty going about!!! They turned "DARTS" into a sport why not CHESS? We need a big named promoter to grab this by the horns & do some sort of speed formart in regards for TV purposes.... Then again some people sit down a watch "SNOOKER" all day long. What i'm trying to say is, we need people to push it out there! If poker, darts, snooker & even "CRICKET" is getting screened... "YAWN" to CRICKET!! Then why isn't chess?
I just googled chess clubs in my area and theres not one local to me. Let's get on to these TV Producers!!! haha good day enjoy your games & i'll see you at the table.

the answer to that is, all the other games you mention spectators can see what is happening.. it is more visual so to speak..
in chess, maybe you can see the board if they play, but you can't possibly visualize what they are thinking exactly.. chess isn't just a spectator play that's all..
that's my low-rated opinion, anyway..

"They" didn't turn darts and poker into sports. Passionate, dedicated dart and poker enthusiasts promoted the hell out of their pastimes until those things went (to differing degrees) mainstream.
Chess isn't being blackballed. It's just that its enthusiasts aren't particularly good at promoting it. If you want it to become bigger, take the reins on the promotional effort. Organize. Campaign. Write. Petition. Wrangle sponsorships. Promote.

why don't you pay for a diamond membership on this site and enjoy all the excellent chess videos posted by numerous GMs, IMs, and NMs for diamond members here ?
material is readily available, in depth analysis and commentary.
there are several hundred available now - each from 20 to 35 minutes long. (would keep you engaged for many weeks if you have 2 hours a day to work with them.)
regards,
Hi, I used to pay for it. Going to get back on the membership sometime soon. @ the moment just playing and getting my game up. Thanks
If they show up at a chess tournament, they must play other GMs, making a prize a gamble. Why would weaker players pay to play in a tournament they know they can't win? If they try to teach, they have to compete with books. They can write a book, though. As for people wanting to play a strong player, we now have computers stronger than them. For now GMs can make money playing against super computers, but I think eventually they'll just have computers test other computers once a few bench marks are set.
Am I right? Or do people rated 24 still have many opportunities to make money?
