We resign.
If the position is hopeless, no attacking chances & you are under siege & have lost significant material, then resign.

When your body tells you to. Ever felt the effects of polonium poisoning? That diziness and vomit? When you feel like that you resign. Not later (because you die just like that KGB agent) and not before because you end up like a sissy.
It is a fine line, I know, but it is what high end GENTLE MEN do. It is what we have to do, son.
