How do I use a chess engine to get better at chess?

i just got a copy of Fritz

but i don't know what i need to do to use it to improve my chess understanding

Play games (not necessarily against the computer, maybe on chess.com) then analyse the games by yourself without the computer to see what you think you did wrong, then analyse with computer

The computer will point out your mistakes. This will help you next time around, as now you are less likely to make such a mistake. Just my theory.
