How do the chess ratings work?

1. Do you get a smaller or larger increment due to the difference in ratings?

2. Has it got anything to do w/ the amount of games played?

3. Can I oppress (play a weaker opponent and accumulate more points) or get more value out of playing a higher rated opponent (ant vs giant)?

4. What is chess.com s system and how significant is it?

The site uses the Glicko rating system. It includes a measure of rating uncertainty, called the rating deviation (RD) value. Accounts with few games in a rating pool will have a high RD value and will see larger rating swings after games. As more games are played the RD value drops as does the magnitude of those changes. RD value will increase if there are larger time gaps in game play.

Like most rating systems, the rating change depends on the expected outcome and the difference in rating between opponents, though the RD value will have an impact as well. So, a higher rated player will get fewer points for winning against someone a lot lower rated and will lose more points if they lose or draw the game. As ratings get closer together, the rating changes are more even.
Regarding point 3, if you try to play exclusively lower rated players, losses and draws are going to have a bigger impact and wins will have a lower increase.

1 last question.

SO

Let s just say I play against someone w/ a 400 rating difference. Will my rating increase/decrease dependent on the result?

ALSO

Don t u think that if I play against the same player but I win w/ a margin (another example. I am merciless and I win the game by being hostile should I receive a bigger reward or not?). Surely how you win the game whether it was a quick game/long-lasting battle should be taken into account.Right.

That leads me to the last point. I reckon when taken into consideration mistakes/blunders/misses should ALL be relevant.
