you gotta just play the best move in the position :) if that is offensive, great. if defensive, do it. just look for the BEST move.

Yeah, most of the time you don't really have that choice, at least in that sense; Although you can select your opening repertoire according to your preferences.

What is for me I would say 60%/40% - offensive/defensive. However it very much depends on your opponent. If you are playing against a much stronger opponent who is constantly attacking you - of course you are forced to be defensive and make defensive moves, and look for your chances in counterattacks, trades and in the endgame (if your opponent hasn't checkmated you in the middlegame). While playing against a weaker opponent you attack by yourself. But Erik is right that in every situation you should try to find the best move.

I am an offensive player I think but mainly because I used to play only against people who weren`t as good, now that I am playing people my level and higher, I am learning to defend more, which I think is the main thing I have to improve (along with openings, but I think it is very much linked together). But in the end I don`t think a player should be offensive or defensive, because both are very linked, and I would even say that they are both the same.
well im kinda both i guess. i dont really care about that. if your wondering what you should be then here's my advice. dont really be any. just do whatever move is best for you!
There's a time to attack, there's a time to defend. What's important is to know when to attack or defend and how to best carry out your plans. Both don't come easy. And both are attributes of a good chess player. Such a level may be difficult to attain, but not impossible. We can try, right?
It really depends on the game. If it is good for me to attack, I'll attack. If it is better to defend for a while, I'll defend.

I derive much satisfaction from defending against an aggressive player. Once I've taken the wind out of their sails, then its my turn to attack, and I get to enjoy that phase of the game. Of course this only works when my opponent sucks...
