How does one person become a GM on chess.com? Is it rating-based, tournament-based or what?
Asking for a friend 😁

You can't.

FIDE is the world over the board organization that awards titles like Grandmaster.

No other organization's titles are worth anything.

Thanks.
My friend noticed that people like Hikaru, had GM in red next to his name, so he was wondering how he acquired that.

Yes, Hikaru is a FIDE Grandmaster. Chess.com recognizes that title and posts the red GM in front of his name.

You have to get a real FIDE title first. This can only be done over-the-board in real life tournaments. Then you log in to chess.com and tell them that you're a grandmaster or International Master or whatever. They'll ask for proof. Then you show them proof and then they'll add the title next to your name and give you free diamond membership forever!

Always double check: when Chess.com recognises a title, you can hover over it and it will give the full description. There are also people who use the "GM" letters as an avatar so that on first glance on some screens, it looks like they have a title when in reality they haven't verified it with Chess.com

Yeah, put simply chess.com recognizes titles, but does not award titles.

There also is a page where you can confirm that you have a title. It will ask for your name and surname, elo, your picture with a chess.com sign, your passport, etc. It’s a long thing. I got second place in U9 European chess championship and it said that they would reward a “CM” title. So, we went to that page and said that I had a title but it said that in order to be a CM, you at least have to have a 2000 elo.😤☹️

Hmm, but tournaments can sometime award titles even if you don't meet the rating requirements.

Does your FIDE profile show the CM title?

Checks out - you should check with your federation.

The other kids in the tournament marked as c do have their CM titles despite their ratings.

You simply don't know how much wrong is your third sentence.

Sure it's possible. People hack governments, so why not chess.com.

It's just wildly impractical.

Avatar of PLXMN2

Easy. Just put your name as a real grandmaster and then try to play really well to get a good elo rating and then go to that page

You would need to hack FIDE. They issue the GM title.
