i love my fiance dearly, however i think she's gonna hold me back financially from my dreams of becoming a Grandmaster. We both have baggage, i can barley afford mine, i know to obtain the title you must travel worldwide, is this a catch 22?

She will thank you if you are just honest.

PS Your 790 rating is holding you back more.

Something like: "It's not me, it's you" will be enough.

heyRick

Why don't you make up something more believable? Maybe you can tell her that the new administration just offered you a diplomatic post in Paraguay.

thank you for the advice guys, we are now happily married, and I'll jus dream of becoming a Grandmaster

So from almost splitting a month ago, you end up marrying the poor girl. Hard to believe mate

TheAuthority

Invite her to play chess. She'll dump you.

Just tell her "listen, Judith, your rating isn't what it used to and you are holding me back".

Fifty ways to leave your lover is such a great song..

Based on the reasoning you provided, If I were you, I'd stay with my fiance, especially if you love her dearly. Very few people make it to a grandmaster title; even people who are incredibly good don't make it. Chess is a great hobby to have, but I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket. It's also possible to play chess AND be in a serious relationship or marriage.

Oh, it looks like my advice is outdated. Didn't realize you made your decision already
