How do you find other chess players IRL?

I would like to play chess in meatspace (in addition to online), but I don't know anyone who really plays.  I live in the suburbs of a large city in my state, so it's not like I live on the fringe of civilization.  Even so, it's hard to find people with similar interests, and I often don't know where to start.

There is supposedly a chess club at my college, that meets for like an hour once a week, not regular enough for my liking.  I want to get decent at the game, so hopefully I could find players to practice with almost daily. I looked for other clubs in my area, but nothing turned up.  I'm also shy socially, so I tend not to seek people out but wait for someone to advertise a group or club.

So for those who were or are in a similar situation, what's your plan to find other players, or what has worked for you if you did?  Has anyone actually started their own local club from scratch?

There is likely several chess clubs in your area. If you are a member of the USCF, the put together a list of tournaments and clubs by state.

http://www.masschess.org/ has a list of tournaments in your state. Go to a couple and ask where people get together :)

Don't you find using the term "meatspace" in a serious sense to be rather disturbing, d00d?

I kinda like it.  Then again, when I was growing up (the 70s) it was good to be disturbing. Smile

I don't like any guys around my meatspace.

No offence.

In the 70s we were also offensive.  And liked it.

Speaking of Chess in "Meatspace," here is a fitting chessboard for it:

And a set to go with it:
