How do you play in a tournament???

I always wanna join tournaments, but when I press join tournaments I have NO IDEA what to do! How do you actually PLAY? Can somebody plz tell me? Thx
Simple, just press join but you have wait for it to start which sometimes takes quite a while.
Ok, thx will I get a notification when it starts and how does it start?
