How do you think chess relates to life?

The relation is simple; chess is a waste of life.

Unfortunately I'm too much of a beginner at chess to elaborate further on some of my thoughts, but here are a few.

Openings-The choices we make when we are young are very important.  Even though they seem small in the moment, they help us acheive a life full of meaning and purpose.

Balancing the importance of material and position-Sometimes in life we are obsessed with having more than what we have, more than the next guy, and that will solve all of our problems.  Indeed, money, possessions, and other MATERIAL things can help us in having a meaningful life, but they do not guarantee it.  For most of us, we aren't blessed with those things.  However, if we keep working hard, live life with purpose, and put ourselves in POSITION succeed, we will still find success nonetheless.

IMO, chess is all calculation.  If you brain is a good calculator you will excel at chess.  But you cannot approach life with all calculation.  You cannot approach your aging parents with all calculation.  You cannot raise your children with all calculation.  You cannot help the needy and destitute with all calculation.  You cannot fall in love with all calculation.  It doesn't work with life.  People will despise you, and you will be alone and miserable.  I have never met anyone who was completely alone (despised) and was actually happy.  i.e. mass shooters and serial killers are often loners. They do what they do because they cannot connect and they are unhappy inside.

Interestingly to me, because chess is all calculation, I often find people who are asocial or antisocial playing the game.  Because it suits them.

WOW!! nandhna, you win the Blue Ribbon if there is one for these threads. Very well put and seemingly, well thought out!! I think in life, seeking to improve rathy thanobessessing with winning and getting frustrated when you don't. Life is like that. Full of bumps, curves and sometimes bruises and scars. But, as in chess, we CAN learn rom our mistakes and can enjoy chess/life no matter what the present circumstances. Well done, my friend.

thank you dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wish u all the best..

In this case, you play the game with a positive frame of mind. You play to win. You play to conquer the dark side. You define the pace of the game and you will probably control the outcome. Victory will have it’s own sweet taste. By the way, don’t confuse an “active” approach with an “overconfident” approach - overconfidence is generally not guarded by caution, thought, or adaptation. The importance of consistency: Like chess, life is a game of mental tenacity. It doesn’t matter how intelligent you are; if you don’t hang in there with consistent positive efforts, your opponent will eventually start eating into your defenses. If you do exceedingly dumb things, you will be eaten alive.

nandhna ?

don't take the game seriously. That's for a fool. Chess is fundamentally addictive....that's why it'll confuse you. As Dr. Kenneth Colby (a pioneer of the chess computer) once stated, "Chess is modular". Don't attempt to relate it to anything. It's simply a silly game that has yet to prove it helps you in other aspects of life. A good word of advise: DO NOT PLAY for 28 days and reassess your thinking.

....and DO NOT confuse chess prowess with intelligence level. Mistake ONE. p.s. - Many, MANY, a top chessplayer have deeply regretted their endless, wasted hours hunkered over a board....realizing their own self-pathetisism.

Chess is an excellent exercise in cause-and-effect.  Probably that is why it mostly appeals to men.

Chess is an escape from life, a highly unsuccessful escape.

Life sucks. Chess doesn't.

A lot of what I would say is covered, but an idea: sometimes choices must be made, and things must be sacrificed, to meet the greater goals in life.
