When I started chess.com I dropped to about 600 it seems close to impossible to raise myself back to where I started when it only gives me 20 or so points per game

20ish points for a win = 30ish wins in a row to get from 600 to 1200.

Win more games than you lose.

When you finally get back to 1200 it will have been a long journey and your chess will have improved dramatically. If you do it in under 100 games you will have done very well indeed. Learn from mistakes and do tactic puzzles.

How did you get from 1200 to 600 to begin with. The only way I see that could have reasonably happened is if you were a new player on this site and you lost a few early games. The site adjusts initial elo and just a few defeats would have seen that elo plummeting.

Instead of worrying about getting to 1200, first try and learn. Once you play better chess your rating will increase gradually.

By mating with another 600, obviously.  Haven't you seen chess.com's "torrid fling" section?

I think you initially begin at 1200 if you say that you're a beginner player. The only way to truly get to 1200 is to practice a lot. Or you could create an account and begin at 1200 and never play any games that will ruin the rating.

I think they count 1200 as intermediate
