How does chess playing contribute to global warming or help solve it?

if you removed every single human from the planet, climate change would still continue as it's always happened for millions for years, we're even overdue an ice age, whilst people contribute to the increase in the warming of the planet (and they do) it's not worth spending your life worrying about it. People often talk about 'warmest decade on record' - doesn't that sound amazing, but not when you realise those records have only been kept for the last 140 years, bearing in mind the planet is over 4.5 billion years old.

Planes are never going to be grounded, there's almost 10,000 planes in the sky at any given point in time carrying over a million people, you can do the maths to work that out yearly, and it's transportation that is one the biggest cause of greenhouse gases, even the mere production of electricity is just as big a cause as transportation, electricity being the so called green energy. In the last 14 years alone, China has consumed more coal then the rest of world combined and they're not slowing down, India are also burning record amounts of fossil fuels and they both try to increase living standards, two countries, more than one third of the world's population.

Fighting climate change in 'developed countries' to combat global warming is almost futile when you bare that in mind, chocolate teapots come to mind. I don't particularly care about all of this save the planet stuff, I'd rather play chess and save myself the headache, I'll be dead within 50 years , I rather go to the grave knowing I reached 2000 rating than sit and worry myself sick about sea levels rising 2 centimetres instead.

Having said all that, I assume the opening poster is on the wind up anyway.

You are on the wind up too, as are all of us. But will you go down without a fight? Playing chess until the electricity goes out permanantly, and your air conditioner with it?

Are you saying that because the weather gets warmer when the sun comes up in the morning?

The best we can hope for is 2 degrees by 2050 if we start cutting emissions right away. So I am asking here because I love chess whether I should give up chess or keep playing it. It will be of no great import but the decision means much to me, even if your decision doesn't matter to you.

Dont forget tha chess is of humans passion while science an animal vice!! You can play chess or you can try to save the world it doesnt matter!! Events happens by theirselves

If you think in that sense then humans existing is itself a threat to the existence of Earth.

The biggest contribution of chess against global warming is to create a brotherhood of man: gens una summus and peace on earth. Each warplane flying, each tank rolling, each missile flying, each bullet fired, each grenade or bomb exploding, each building demolished... all contribute to global warming.

A better question than my original question is how can we use chess, as a human activity, in all its manifestations, to help bring about a less carbon-y atmosphere in the future?

For example, if 25,000 people stay home and play chess, it is better than if the same 25,000 people would go out and cut down trees with a chain saw. Better still if those 25,000 people would find those with the chainsaws and teach them to enjoy chess, instead of what they are doing. It applies as much to digging oil wells. Chess can be a means of subversive behavior.

A small army of chess players can Earth Day, April 22 2024, flood the social media with special invitations for people who own large pickup trucks to play the most manly and warlike game of them all. Special chess sets with pickup trucks for rooks and cowboys for knights ... the possibilities are endless!
