OR

just plain, enjoy chess put in a moderate amount of time and effort at it Play in a club and attend tournaments as your able to (expense and difficulty) keep doing this for months to years

and see how far you can get.

25 might be too old to hope for Gm, but its a better time in life to improve, than for example, 42.

Hey now, watch it kid!  I'm only 5 months and a day away from 42 myself!  tongue.png

Play the tactics trainer each day; it's fun and it doesn't take a lot of time.

When you are starting out, the most important things are king safety and not hanging pieces. Next is tactics, and if you master those then move on to deeper strategy / positional awareness and evaluation.

Repetition is key also. A grandmaster has memorized tens of thousands of positions, maybe even more, and relies as much on this memory as he does on calculation. Without this lexicon of experience a player can't advance to the top level.

Chess is very hard and most people don't make master no matter how hard they try, but if you enjoy the game and make progress that is what really matters.

but you sir are already at 2100.

I'm way low on the food chain.  I gotta to shake "mediocrity" and try to be something more than just an inept patzer chess player.  mr King might help.

You know, there are other things you can be a grandmaster at!

I consider myself a Grandmaster at Tic Tac Toe as I've never lost a game in my life.  I am UNDEFEATED with a few wins under my belt!

People like Rosanne Barr and Aretha Franklin are Grandmasters at eating!  I don't think I could get that big if I tried!  LOL!

Tic Tac Toe is solved and it is a draw.

That did need to be said however, tic tac toe is a solved game. This makes it hard to compare to chess.

Do you guys think chess will get more boring the better the players get? I'm guessing that if players are better their will be more draws. I like the tic tac toe example used on here, and the only reason tic tac toe is boring because everybody is an expert at it so everybody draws.

Guys, I'm sure there is classical music forums you can visit if you want to keep discussing this above.

thegreat_patzer

Chess will not be "more boring" for me, the better I get- as there's one thing I'm totally bored with ; its losing with out a fight.

I need to turn the page on blunders and try to last longer and do better.

if you mean professional chess;  I'm going to go out on a limb.

people playing chess and appreciating the game is what gives the professional his audience.  and an audience of  chess players will be interested in following tournament chess even if many games are draws.

btw, isn't  this topic being covered by one of your other threads?

I dont understand this "boring" mindset?  I know the better i get, the better the competition, the better the games, and the more i enjoy the game.  Sitting across from better competition means i have to put in more effort, study more, and take the game more serious.  I dont see, or understand how any of this is "boring"

I cant imagine the skill it takes at the world class level, and i definitely cant see it being boring.  One of the most enjoyable things i like doing is watching the Open section at tournaments.  Sittting there trying to figure out what move will be made, and the thrill of getting it right!

I understand that this is the livelyhood and living for many chess players.  I also understand that they arent playing to "entertain" me.  They are playing to make a living.  The entertainment comes later like sitting at the Pai Gao table with GM Enrico Sevillano.

None of this is "boring" and if you think it is, maybe chess isnt for you.

I want to make a consensus here for anybody coming for easy answers, or easy dreams. According to more users here becoming a GM is extremely difficult. Strive instead for an easier goal like becoming an FM, CM, or IM. Hope this consensus helps. I know it's difficult to look through all the clutter.

Karpark

One of my friends is a CM with one IM norm. He has been busting his balls off pretty much full-time (he only works very part-time, I understand, because of a serious disability) trying to get the second and third norms, traveling around from tournament to tournament, match to match, while studying and studying, even beating the occasional GM. It's not easy out there.

Might be a stupid question but what conditions are there to become CM? Is having 2100 ELO automatically qualifies you for it? My personal long term goal would be to achieve a ranking of 2000...

2200 Fide Elo.

I could easily get you to NM in 2 years and GM probably, but that amount of effort requires money and lots of it. But certainly I can get you to a titled player unless your iq was less than 100, then no chance.

I disagree with your consensus.

(and so do a lot of other people posting here).  no one said you should hope to attain any kind of master.

IMHO.  expert is possible with a huge amount of dedication and effort and its not clear you can hope for more.   See posts from people like DennisNorman and ThrillerFan that have walked the walk.

"I want to make a consensus here for anybody coming for easy answers, or easy dreams. According to more users here becoming a GM is impossible. Strive instead for an easier goal like becoming an expert. Hope this consensus helps. ....NOW go join a chess tournament!"

there I have fixed it for you OP.

Note Lasker's post means that practically everyone who is good at chess and has a Rating is urging to you to join a chess tournament BEFORE YOU HAVE any long term goals.

on the other hand, just playing chess online works if you want no hope to achieve anything real in the chess world.

I myself aspire to become a NM but partially this is because I think I am young enough to have a shot, and partially this is because I feel I have the resources around me to do it. But it's very difficult for anyone who's not a young child (maybe even for young children, too; I don't know) to break a plateau, and the higher your plateau the tougher it is to crack. I suspect my playing strength is stronger than my rating nowadays and I may be on the verge of some breakthrough, but it's not clear until it happens
