How game time works

Okay!  I thought I was going crazy.  But I just don't understand how things work, obviously.

Yesterday, a match that had stalled out and my opponent had 17 hours left, finally made a move.  Now, it says he has 2 days left.  So, clearly I am not understanding.  When it says 17 hours left, that means he has 17 hours left on his two days, huh?  Not 17 hours total left in the game?  Duh?

The time control for correspondence (online) games represents time PER move and not time PER game.

On chess.com, correspondence chess time controls are measured per move; for example, in this case the time control is 2 days per move.

His 17 hours was the time left him to make a move as not to lose the game. As soon as he made his move, you're clock started with 2 days to make you're move in.  Once you make you're move, he will have 2 days to make his move again........
