If the BYP is reading this.....good. This should be a wake up call for him but I doubt it he will.

like me he's probably going why should I bother! On another note I did enjoy his video, so if anything he won a viewer. :)

His videos need to carry a warning: players under 1800 watch at their own risk.

He is doing it for himself to help himself review. If you believe it is doing bad than simple do not watch it and do something esle.

Trust me, I don't watch it. But is sad to heard how much harm is doing to the beginners.

He is about 1200 level.

The BYP has a U.S.C.F. rating of around 800. He is a little bit underrated, but I wouldn't say he's any better than 1100, and he's certainly not qualified to teach anyone about how to improve at chess, although to his credit, I do admire his enthusiasm and love of the game.

He said he wants to be 2300. He is not 2300, and it is certain that he will never reach 2300. A middle-aged man rated 700 probably cannot ever become 2300, and if he can, it certainly isn't by studying in-depth strategic concepts when his main problems are elementary tactical oversights. Mr. Shirts is going about it completely the wrong way. Books like The Amateur's Mind and Reassess Your Chess are written with the assumption that the reader has basic tactical understanding, at least the tactical ability of a Class D player. This is because it is necessary to develop tactical ability before strategic ability comes in. The BYP doesn't understand this, although it is probably too late for him to become a master anyway even if he did focus his energy on tactics and calculation.

What is a class D player?

Any player rated in OTB play (not online or blitz play) between 1200 and 1399.

The U.S. Chess Federation class system works like this:

Class E: 1000-1199

Class D: 1200-1399

Class C: 1400-1599

Class B: 1600-1799

Class A: 1800-1999

Expert: 2000-2199

Master: 2200+

Actually, I'm not sure. Maybe so. However, there are no Category Norms for players beneath 1000, so I don't think that is official in any way.

We are talking about chess not newspaper her.

A facebook friend says he is fine, however he has been more concerned with religion lately.

I watched part of his chess psychology video and it cost me a hundred ELO points and 20 IQ.  I would rather take a 1" drill bit to the skull.

Why guess?  If you are going to watch chess on youtube start with Daniel King.

"Ha ha, Backyard professor sucks!"

"YEAH! He double sucks!!"

"TRIPLE SUCKS!!!"

"He's not so bad...."

"HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!"

kco

"GM" ??? you sure about that ?

AlisonHart

This is really amusing....because - as a religion scholar - I find his religious insights ridiculous....but - as a chess player - I find his insights interesting.......

so....conflicted.....

If you know anything about the subject of his videos, then you know that he doesn't know much and that most of what he knows isn't so.

He is an awful chess player but I admire his enthusiasm for the game .

I don't wish to make fun of him but why would anyone want to learn from someone who is obviously nothing more than a rank amateur when there are hundreds of videos on Youtube by excellent highly rated chess teachers?

It would seem to me that to impart knowledge one would have to explain the ideas behind the moves and relate it to other parts of a chess game.  An amateur can't do that by reading out of some chess book, no matter how good that chess book might be.

I always have to shake my head when I watch his videos. He is a nice guy but he shouldnt teach anyone chess.

Gunz-N-Guitarz

So many high and mighty's. I've watched several of his videos. Mostly for entertainment value. The BYP never claims to be a good chess player. In fact, if you'll watch his videos you would know that he consistently makes reference to his own chess inadeqacies. He is no different than the rest of us. He is simply looking for his path to understand chess and improve. It's funny how none of the haters are titled players. If you are so much more brilliant than the BYP then start your own YouTube channel and share your vast knowledge with the rest of us. And when you have many subscribers as he does.... And a title then be a miserable hater. Until then you are just that whiny "little guy" in a big locker room

Where is a hater? Saying your honest opinion=hating? wtf
