how I get off tilt

I have discovered that when I am on tilt, watching a good instructive chess video (GothamChess how to win at chess, Danya speedrun, etc) helps me get off tilt. Like, just watch it, all the way through, no distractions, and i stop tilting in a couple hours.

Thoughts?

Never tried this when tilting, but I do similar with meme compilations and funny videos; I usually watch that after I'm tilting. The humor might help me untilt, but it is really more just a way to take my mind off of the (bad for me) chess of the session.

That’s a good tip.

I tend to go on puzzles and game tilts to find out just stopping for the day works best for me.

I also find grinding doesn’t work for me either.

I find grinding makes it worse

When I'm on tilt, it's vicious. I get frustrated watching chess videos, and when I take my mind off of chess, I miss it and want to continue playing to untilt. Your method makes sense, and I'll try to see if I can persevere through a couple of good videos.

Usually. The problem is that sometimes I can successfully untilt in a grind and gain rating for the day. Probably 9/10 times my grinding makes it worse, but that 1/10 chance tricks me into keep playing.

I'd like to think that over the years, I've gotten better at learning when to quit for the day, but I'm still not perfect with it xD

i just keep playing when feeling in high spirits and comfortable

Notice how I said “instructive”. Not someone getting totally destroyed. I remember watching this one, and thinking it was quite instructive content. He points out general guidelines, and actually shows you how he finds the moves he finds, instead of just going “oh so [] is really strong here”

When I lose a few games, I get frustrated. Playing with frustration leads to losing more games. So I tend to take a few days off and surprisingly I come back stronger and earn more rating points than I lost. Can anyone relate?

y’see, I’ve tried that, and I’ve heard similar advice from others, but when I come back my brain malfunctions and I forget how to play

i took a 3 day break once then hung a queen on move 8

That just happened to me, and I'm struggling to regain the points that I tilted

Instructive? Speedrun?

It helps you sort yourself out mentally.

When you're on a true tilt, you get impatient and stop paying attention to details and start forcing things. When you listen to someone like Danya, he inspires you to start doing the right things that you already knew, but ignored in your tilted state. Once you start following the right process you can apply your skill again.

Whenever you lose a game, stop playing and analyse it first.
That channels the negative emotions of the loss towards a positive goal: improving and prevents tilt.
