How long does it take to become good?

I'm about a 1150ish player at the moment, I've been playing consistently for about a week now, before that i've never studied chess but always played here and there throughout my life. I hate being only 1150, and i hate losing even more.. I've been studying, and practicing for a week and still my brother is able to beat me sometimes.. just like he used to be able to. I feel i've made some progress but have yet to break through any real barriers..am i just not tactical enough for chess or does this come with time/experience?

Well, it takes a lot longer than a week. If I ever get good, I'll tell you how long it takes. Wink

Be patient, learn the basics, and learn how to lose gracefully, because you're gonna lose a lot of games.

If you "hate losing," and are looking for / expecting meaningful improvement after only one week of serious play, it's safe to say you're not going to have much fun playing chess. Do yourself a favor and find another hobby.

Maybe one suggestion for making the losing easier to take: Look at each loss as a chance to learn something new.

I disagree, I believe that my disdain for losing will only help me succeed in the long run Tongue Out

I hit 2000+ in about 4 years of serious play and study.  Thats from rank beginner

dayum that's a long time, thank you.. i'm sure it will take me that long as well, chess is soo much more than it seems

People improve at different rates. I'd recommend figuring out a study plan for you and working on that in some routine manner. Early on learn opening principles, work on your tactics a lot, and find a broad spectrum endgame book (one that has material from beginner to advanced level) and learn basic endgame theory. Of course continue to play reguarly but if you want to improve quickly stop playing much if any blitz games and play longer games so you can use time to work out ideas and moves instead of relying on memory and intuition. Blitz can be very useful for more advanced players but I think it only retards entry level players progress.

As long as you're enjoying it. Good luck. You might look at the Build Up Your Chess series of books by Artur Yusupov.

Hey, OK, but at what age did you start your 4 years of study and play? That could make a HUGE difference. If there's one thing I know about learning chess, it's the sooner you start, the better. Doesn't everyone agree?

After 500 games I've imporved about 800 points but I stopped for a while now I'm back and I haven't lost the last 15 rated standard games so I think soon I'll be 1600 so maybe play alot you'll get better and make sure to have a rest

Avatar of bigbird419

Side note I don't like to play anything other than standard you can see that in my rating because my connection is laggy so it takes like 20 to move a piece so I always loose

Actually that's not a long time, more like meteoric. Very few improve so quickly, and most that do are kids/teenagers.

Yeah, 4 years is not much.  And if you're an adult with a job and all that, then it's more like 8-10 years, if you keep at it nearly every day.

But a 1300-1400 rating is probably the kind of player the OP currently thinks of as incredibly good (pretty much 100% win rate vs casual players).  Could probably do that in 1 year with consistent practice.

Define 'good'.

why are  you only playing blitz? you have to play  standard and correspondance to get better-5 minute chess games only do so much for rookies.. I have this feeling  that you are already so worn out after one week-you won't be playing in  four years.

it took me three years to grow from 1200 to 1500 in live blitz..it takes time for people who don't play regularly(esp.me)...i think we get more refined in our technique when we rate our own opening ,middle and endgame skills on a scale of 1-10.....so you got to continually rate yourself and have a conversation with your own subconscious to improve with time...i guess i might reach 1700 in a couple of more years with some more accuracy in play.....so its something like that...and never give up chess during your losing streaks
