I first learned chess about 7 years ago but I would say I’ve played chess for about 3-4 years with all of the breaks in between

I think I learned how to play when I was 8. In high school I got more interested in chess because of the annual chess tournament. I started playing online when I was 16. I'm 27 now. So 19 years total but I've had a lot of gaps where I didn't play at all for a while.

I "learned" chess (meaning rules and "playing") sometime in elementary school, perhaps around 5th grade. However, I did not really "learn" chess until I decided I would try it more seriously to see how much I could improve - more as a challenge for myself than anything else; of course, I had little idea how much chess came out of this challenge and how much time I would then spend on chess - playing, studying, analyzing etc. It was soon after I decided to seriously take up chess that I realized how competitive chess could be, and how what I "played" in elementary school was just moving pieces and not quite chess as it should be.

The day I decided to take up chess more seriously was the day I created my chess.com account; at the time of me writing this, that was about one year ago.

There is so much more to learn, but it has been a fun "challenge" and I am sure it will bring much more ahead as I improve my chess ability - as will everyone with theirs.
