How many blitz games, puzzles, lessons etc should I do?

This forum was made in the hope that high rated players such as royal knight, b1zmark and ninjaswat etc see this. Hopefully, some titled players see it but I'm not going to get my hopes too high. So I'm trying to get 1600 rating in rapid. Currently basically 1300 in rapid. How many puzzles, blitz games, lessons, puzzle rush, puzzle battle and drills should I do in a day?

", blitz games" + none at all, if your goal is 1600 rapid, then play rapid and analyse your lost games

It really depends on your personal schedule and how much effort you are willing to invest into chess. Naturally, the more time you can afford to put into chess, then the more you'll likely get out of it results-wise.

I believe that it is more about learning and creating a "winning" routine for yourself than it is about arbitrary amounts of time etc.

Take puzzles for example. Pattern recognition is no doubt extremely important in chess, so it makes sense to do chess puzzles. How many though? Everyone seems to disagree, but I think it is more about doing puzzles in routine (I'd advise a few puzzles daily whenever you are motivated, but not missing a day if you can help it) than it is about the exact quantity of puzzles.

As for games, there is no denying that learning chess efficiently seems to be some mixture of playing experience (playing games) and learning on the side (chess study/analysis/reading etc.). Everyone will play different amounts, but I used to play about 3 hour sessions each day (sometimes more than one session!) of chess.com games when I was around 1500-1600 rating. I probably play less than that now, but part of that is simply putting my time into non-chess things or putting my chess time more into study and less often with games. I would like to get back to playing games on chess.com more regularly again, but that is just for me; some 1600 players might play way more and some might play way less.

Playing games is certainly good because of the practice and experience, but I don't think there is a set amount you need to play and you should only play if you are motivated. When I was playing 3 hour sessions most times, I didn't really "plan" for 3 hours, that was just how long it naturally took me. I will comment that my sessions were almost exclusively 10 min games or longer time control though. I'd generally stay away from blitz, but every now and then it can be a different change of pace to try some speed chess.

Lessons I also did each day with my "daily puzzles routine" but again, it probably isn't a set amount because everyone is different and learns at their own pace.

Puzzle Rush and Puzzle Battle were just "fun" or "challenging" things for me to try every now and then, but no real habit to them (except when I recently was working on my goal of 50+ for Puzzle Rush Survival: https://www.chess.com/blog/KeSetoKaiba/puzzle-rush-survival-50-goal-reached ).

Same situation with drills. I never had a routine for doing them. I did learn basic theoretical endgames (mostly before 1300 and certainly by around 1400 I knew most of them minus the absolute toughest ones) early on though. I just do drills every now and then if I feel like it.

For your 'list" I'd also comment that analysis of your own games is vitally important. I ritualistically would analyze my online games as soon as the game ended and I also analyzed my in-person games by inputting the moves into chess.com Analysis Board after I finished my game. There is also merit to analysis without a computer first, but the main point is to be doing something to find improvements and to notice common blunders and the "real reason" behind them. Usually, it isn't the "blunder" move itself, but actually something several moves before that lead up to it. Maybe you hung your Queen on move 10, but the "real blunder" was bringing the Queen out so early instead of developing other pieces.

Good luck with your chess happy.png

These numbers sound way too high to me. I had the free chess.com membership when I was 1600, so I'd do the free "Daily Puzzle", 5 free "tactics" [renamed "Puzzles" now], 1 free "lesson" [changed to one per week or something allowed now I think or something like that] and my 1 free "Puzzle Rush" [5 min back then because chess.com didn't invent 3 min or Survival back then].

I didn't play blitz regularly, but since I did play a lot of games, I'm sure I'd probably have played more than 20 games per day if I did play blitz. Some days I played more games than others though.

I don't belong in the post but I will still shamelessly ask on average how much time does it take to get to 1600

Depends since some rating pools are tougher than others, but MOST chess players NEVER reach 1600+ rating on chess.com! 1600 is certainly attainable for those with a knack for chess and willing to put the time in, but I'd guess the "average" time to reach 1600+ chess.com would be maybe 3 years IF that player ever reaches this rating.

You can check my chess.com statistics for more specifics, but I think it took me about a year and a half or two years to get to 1600 on chess.com; but when I created my account new, my rating stabilized around 1150, so it might take longer if someone was lower rated than this.

Conversely, there are always some people who just rocket up the ratings and get to 1600 in a year or something really applause-worthy. This doesn't necessarily make them a chess prodigy though. Some players improve a ton and then plateau and others just keep improving; potential is a tough thing to predict and 1600 rating is likely too early to tell just how good someone really will be years later though.

well idk... i dont do puzzles because i am lazy but i belive that they are fine when you want be better... i am used to play otb so i prefer things like analysis with engine after the game, its always usefull i think ...
And surely if you want to be good in rapid then play rapid and not blitz... playing blitz have no sence if you want to be good in rapid

10 lessons seems quite rushed. Maybe 2 or 3  at most. You should look at the lessons in depth, go back to look at the presented game, and take notes (there may be more but can’t think of it at the top of my head.) Sure, there are exercises with the lesson, but those usually go from the examples presented in the video, so you already know what to play.

You’re definitely reaching 1600. Go for a higher goal.
