It depends entirely on the position. If the play is relatively forced, with the opponent having only one reasonable move at each turn, then it's possible to see more than a dozen moves ahead. But if the play is fluid, with half a dozen or more good alternatives at each move, then it's a waste of time to try to predict the course of play, and you should be guided by general considerations and intuition instead.
In one of my games here on chess.com (from the Team Canada vs Team Malaysia match) when my opponent resigned on move 33 we were still in my opening prep.
I'm just curious since I hear that players with higher ratings can see 10-15 moves ahead and know soon if they will win. I understand someone blundering away the queen in the first 5 moves would create a situation where you can calculate destruction on the board. But if you are playing someone of equal ratings, when can you see you will win unless there is a blunder on your part? Thanks!
