most of the world do not know how to play, thats for sure... go and ask about 10 people randomly on the street and you will find out!

onosson

I would venture a guess that most of the people in the world have never even heard of chess.

MainStreet

Randomly pick 30 persons (how to do it is the creative part),

ask them if they've played the game,

divided their number by 30, and

you'll get the approximate percentage of people who've played chess.

I believe, sir, that you mean 6 times nine, also known as 42 :D

As for the actual number, I'll say 3,141,592,653.5897932384626433832795, give or take a billion

6 times nine is 54 sir. I stand by 7 times 6 equals 42.  Yell Do you really play chess without knowing your times tables?

I presumed that your choice of 42 was a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the wonderful series of novels by Douglass Adams. I therefore reciprocated with another referrence.

In the books (and this is a pretty rough-cut paraphrasing from someone who hasn't read them in the last several years), there's basically a computer (Earth) which can answer any question, though at the cost of a long time. They ask it What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything? The answer it gives is 42. Later, Arthur Dent works out the question to be "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?"

I doubt if even 1 billion people have played chess, which means I think at least 5 billion have not. I'll go further: I don't think 1 billion people have played chess in the history of the world.

Phew, right that took me a while but I've just been and asked everyone. You've no idea how many languages I had to use. Anyway, the answer is 1,257,456,782 havent played it though 25 of those werent sure if they had and 14 asked if bridge counted (what fools eh?).
