Time
How many people think that; Chess is just a Total Waste of Time in Life!
I think chess is a waste of time given that playing it more does not equate in getting better in it. And you are bound to just get frustrated in a plateau and in trying harder to get higher elo. you win you lose this cycle repeats itself for god kniows how long but if you look up at the clock you have wasted 5-10hrs of your time instead of doing something else

Someone accused me of being a smurfer until I told them I'm handicapped by using a phone and an imperfect WiFi.
Online chess is an interesting use of time. I have kind of plateaued at 2200 rapid, but that is deceptive because I experiment with different openings.
If I was to go into an OTB game, my opponents would be shocked to have prepared one thing and for me to do another due to the practice I was getting online.
Is playing chess a waste of time? There are worse things to be known for.
Chess, fishing, hunting are all great ways to waste time. I much prefer all three to “productive” activities.

It all depends. On the one hand studies have shown that playing chess increases mental sharpness, reduces chances of having Alzheimer's, and improves problem solving skills. However, there seem to be some people who always seem to be online and I certainly think there should be more to your life than chess.

I'll say it's much better than scrolling on tiktok or watching a youtube video or Looking on Instagram or reading on reddit or X or Facebook. 🤷♂️

On what planet is having fun a waste of time? Maybe the idiot planet.
We all have different experiences, so one person having a bad experience in chess (e.g. one of the commenters here) does not mean that it's a waste of time!
People are playing online games such as Counter Strike and Massive online multiplayer games hours hours every day without making any money or thinking. At least chess makes you calculate and improve your brain.
Unless your play is mostly intuitive (ex. playing nothing but bullet games (especially if you're just messing around seeing how many wins you can get by using your favorite opening trap)).
its like any other hobby, time consuming but fun.
