If chess is a waste of time, then so is:

watching Game of Thrones,

and listening to music,

and playing a video game,

and reading poetry,

and looking at Facebook,

and sex (unless trying to get pregnant),

and playing poker,

and drinking a beer.

What's wrong with "wasting time"?  Should life really be only about work and making money?  Are we a bunch of puritanical workaholics?  Must we feel guily about experiencng a little enjoyment once in a while?

SPOT ON!

thegreat_patzer

realizing that life is hopeless affair that will end in your death

It is also a waste of time:

  • making someone happy
  • being nice to kids
  • holding the door for someone
  • smiling
  • being pleasant at the store, when someone makes a mistake
  • saying something nice
  • being polite
  • being well dressed
  • regular bathing
  • saying something pleasant or instructive on a internet forum

and you really know these optional  cause there are people that don't

We're all dead anyway, so anything we do is a total waste of time.

We're all waiting for it, that's one thing that never let's us down

Not true. I'm currently rebuilding a camaro. When I'm done I'll either have a bada$$ hot rod or make a lot of money when I sell it. That's a win-win IMO.

I love chess. Something you love is never a waste of time.

Interesting thought.  Perhaps life itself Is a waste of time -- time that could be better spent playing chess.  And it could even be true that playing at life is, in a way, like playing at chess.  Because if chess is worth playing at all, it's worth playing well.  Or not.

It's true that I like puns -- thanks for noticing!  And please Don't worry about punning.  I have a theory here.  First, you seem to like eating vegetables. (I'm sharp enough to pick up on that kind of thing) And this fits my theory that we meat-eaters make up way more than our share of silly verbal jokes. (Have you ever heard a vegan tell a knock-knock joke?  Me neither.)  Vegans, I've noticed, seem to be calm, peaceful, healthy humans, who don't Need to waste time writing little "jokes."  They only waste time playing chess. .... there, I'm back on topic. ;-)

I view chess like a crossword puzzle or Sudoku—it's a fun challenge for the brain.

For some people, chess is more of a sport or even a career. To each their own—as long as you're enjoying it!

No more pointless than anything else. For me it's a break from constantly focusing on making money. I do it just for relaxation. I started chess because I think it's healthier than poker which lead me into gambling addiction. At least with chess I am not blowing thousands at a casino. Chess is just a puzzle with an opponent. Harmless.

Time is infinite. It can't be wasted.

The time you waste is the time spent on things you don't enjoySmile

Isn't talking on the chat an even bigger waste of time. And if chess is a waste of time that what isn't ?

I wonder what activities would count as "non-time-wasting" things to do.
