Trick question 😆 Depends on the size of each square.

Laavanya_Pradhan

Actually, the OP means that how many squares can you form on a chessboard, like e1, f3, e4e3d3d4 and so on.

You can make squares out of multiple coordinates

205 with the square of the board itself?

snoozyman
42

GM_Ibxn

or is it 204?

technical_knockout

there's one square containing all of the squares, but what about the square of the board itself?  OP what's your verdict here is it 205?

pretty sure snoozyman is referencing the 'answer to everything' from 'hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy':  which is why he answers most questions with '42' 😆

206.

Some designs of chess boards have more than 205 in it.

For an n x n board it is the sum for k=1 to n of k^2.
For an 8 x 8 board it is 204.

Apart from that square, some chess boards come with an additional square in its design.

42.

Actually, zero squares.

I'm pretty certain each "square" is not exactly a square at the atomic level.
