How much can a 60 year old expect to improve?

I'm friends with a guy who just turned 60, and one of his main goals is to become a chessmaster. He's rated in the mid 2000s now, and despite studying every day, he makes little progress (Last time he broke 2100 was in 1997). He has good tournaments, and bad tournaments, and his rating has fluctuated between 2000 and 2080, more or less, for the last 15 years. I know of many adult players in their 20s and 30s making the jump from 2000 to 2200, but not of players over 60. Do you think he is just studying incorrectly, or does his age hinder his progress? Does he have a shot of making master?
We can answer that as well as we can tell you if his hair should be longer, if he should chase women. or if his clothes are stylish: you've told us as much about all that as his study habits!
There is a book called Chess Master at any Age by Rolf Wetzell, who achieved it. But it seems to me those who became masters late in life were around 2000 in their younger days. So is there something about visualizing, etc. that's lost after youth, but things that can push you from 2000 to 2200 are positional and things of wisdom that are still acquirable in later age?

Yeah its more possible than any of the forums posters who ask if they can be GMs in 6 months with no coaching, etc.

I would say that it will just take longer, be more frustrating, etc. But if u get the right resources and train correctly, can certainly be done, especially for someone with a lot of time.

I gave it one last try last year. I hired a coach, put in the work, and realized that i dont want to put in that kind of effort anymore. I'm at peace with the decision.

I'm close enough sixty and have enough ambitions remaining, that I'll wager someone at that age can get better. These days, I have to work twice as hard to gain more than I lose. Even so, I'm finding it easier to memorize whole chess games. More often than not, I can record in my database the game I played an hour ago without referencing my scorebook. I couldn't do that when I was a wee young lad of 45.

Why do I plan to die? Was your question to me . . .
Well at 102 I should be a little frail. But the main reason I plan to die is because I will run out of retirement money! . . .
DENVER

GM after 60? Yes! He will need plenty of red bull to stay awake for 4 to 6 hours. Good luck Grandpa!

We Canadians have the advantage there... it's legal in Canada.

He must learn to do headstand like GM Korchnoi.

In the USA it is legal in:

I've started playing chess from the very beginning at an age of 36, always wondered how much i can improve. I got my first OTB slowchess rating a year ago, which was 1119. Now it is 1236 and climbing.
I wonder how far i could go if i continue to study & play chess regularly. Being able to challenge an expert level player seems like a reasonable ambition.

Sure. It's possible to get up to 1800 or so (daily online rating) just by avoiding blunders and capitalizing on your opponent's errors. Going beyond that requires some thinking, though.

I am not just going to say it.... a 60 year old human should be expecting death relatively soon. It is ok to play chess for fun, but lets be realistic... he has bigger things to worry about than spending 8-10 hrs a day studying and preparing at the level that GMs do.
64 here. Bless your heart!
Im almost 54 and peaked as an A player. I realistically understand that busting my butt to, at the minimum maintain that level is a grind. There is no way im going to put in the effort of trying to try and hit Expert. Call me lazy...
