I have progressed a lot since I joined here. My OBT are getting better too. My advice is try to play good thinking games here, just to learn, no preassure and then go to "real" competition over the board. Is a completely different experience watching your clock fading away while you struggle to find a nice move over the board
How much did you progressed since you created your account?
In all seriousness, I am having fun; but, my USCF is 1250. In one yr, I can't seem to keep it raised. But, I never played 960, till I came here. I've played 6 times, and won them all. I have NO idea how. I'm 1550 in 960. Evidently, I think much better out of the box, than I do IN the box.
I joined chess.com about 3 years ago. I was working abroad and i wanted to have a hobby that could last for some years. I knew how to move the pieces and gave it a try to chess :) After 4-5 matches i went down 1000 and i bought a couple of books cause i liked the game. I improved a little and when i came back to Italy i joined a local chess club. Loved the guys and loved the atmosphere. I improved more but still played terrible :)
Bought other books, played more and more OTB and 2 months ago i played in my first tournament here in Firenze. 1 draw, 4 losses (it was an open). Reviewing these 5 games i REALLY improved. Next month my second tournament - Pisa (under 1500) :)
I think it's more about increased awareness than anything. Three years ago I figured I was a pretty decent player. Now I know that I'm not.
Started out doing Blitz at 829 got it over 1300. Switched over to Standard and got my rating up to around 1400. I've only been in Chess.com for almost 3 months now.

Cool! Good luck with your second tournament, i bet you will get some wins!

I know that feel bro haha
And i agree with you.
Haven't really improved my rating this first year to be frank - cuz it seems when I DO improve somewhat I just get much tougher and skilled opposition which promptly knocks me back down the ratings. BUT IT IS FUN and that's why I keep going. Its all about the sheer experience in the end - of playing some guy in Brazil or Thailand or Botswana which I'd never get the chance to do otherwise.

Peace and love to you all out there!!

Romeo60, you kinda step into it, but you are also right on the point its good practice if nothing else, it depends on each individual, how it helps you here at chess.com! If you just played OTB live chess, it does not mean that your chess will improve, it did not for me once I reach my best USCF level, and I could not get much better. The only way I could, would be to get a good professional chess coach. With that said there are always exceptions to any rule of thought.
