I became a premium member of Chess.Com so I could play this game at my convience as well as to enjoy myself( most of the time). This is how much I love chess!

It depends on the games for me, one game I love it and another game I hate it

For me, the farthest thus far is 2125 miles (CLT to LAX - 2003 US Open)

wow.

well my club is a 1 hour drive.

the last tourney was a 1.5 hour drive.

this is all pretty commited IMHO.  on the other hand, there are people that arrange their whole life over chess.   perhaps thrillerfan is one.

if so thumbs up to you.

As much as a hog loves slop. I wouldn't go anywhere without chess.com and luckily thanks to the age I live I don't have to.

I don't know that I would go as far as whole life - I do have a job, wife, and daughter.

However, I have played 2553 rated regular time control over the board tournament games since June 1996, and 2016 will be the first year since 1997 (57 games) where I have played under 100 games, but never have I played 200 in a single year.  Most in 1 year is 183 in 2001.  I was single then.

Let's see, 2016, which will be 93 games all told, is split up as follows:

5 games in Asheville, NC (January - 2 Hours away)

7 games in Chicago, IL (May - 800 miles)

6 games in Las Vegas, NV (June - about 2000 miles)

4 games in Atlanta, GA (July - about 240 miles)

5 games in Greensboro, NC (August - about 1 1/2 hours away)

5 games in Columbia, SC (October - 1 1/2 to 2 hours away)

The other 61 games all being in Charlotte, NC, within a half hour from the house.  So I travel far, but not frequently, like say, Kudrin, for example.

Tournament chess, and the study of the game, is one of the few things I can genuinely say I live for, and get up every morning for. I haven't the slightest idea what my future real-life career will be, nor do I aspire to any profession in particular. So chess is possibly the only area in my life in which I am working towards a specific goal.

I have never taken a trip for chess which rivals that of ThrillerFan above, largely because there is plenty of tournament chess between DC and Philadelphia. But someday I dream of playing a tournament abroad, specifically in France.

Haha I meant totally different staff, like how far would you go for the sake love of chess , someone divorce their wife, some other stories ....

Avatar of thegreat_patzer

I would not divorce my wife for chess nor would I kill a man over a  chess game.   do you really want to find someone who would ?  : scary

I want to hear some crazy stories, based on what chess love does to people

Ok, how about this one.  If someone pointed an AK-47 at my head, and told me I had to quit chess for good or shoot ESP-918 in the head, I'd go with the latter!

Depends what you mean by 'love'? The love for your mother? The love of a beautiful woman? Or the love of a fine cigar.

I have taken up and dropped a ton of things in my life. But I've never stuck with anything as long as I've stuck with chess. Currently I'm getting a bit burnt out though. I'm just sick and tired of openings. They bore me to death. I played one game of 960 and loved it though. And probably more than half my games are boring positions I don't enjoy. If I'm getting demolished or demolishing someone else, it's boring. It seems to be rare that I find myself in a tense game and it's not a position I've seen a bunch of times.
