How much money have you spent on chess?

I can say, conservatively, that I have spent over $3000 on chess. The vast majority of this would be tournament fees/travel expenses, and books.  I also have a couple boards and 2 clocks.

IMKeto

WAYYYYY more than i have won.  And i wouldnt change a thing.

Throughout my entire life I've spent maybe 20 dollars on chess

maathheus

I've spent about 20 USD, I bought Logical Chess Move by Move (15 USD), and the Chess King App, Tatics for Beginners (5 USD).

Sparrie

tough question as im not really sure when am i spending money on chess.

chess is my life, so spending money to play chess means spending money to live

i can easily say i spend $30.000 on chess, but travel expenses tournament fees club membership etc become large numbers when spread over 20+ years grin.png

I own a few books and my wife got me a travel board. All in all maybe $40 over the past few years.
MSC157

Probably around 30-40 € over 7 tournament  (starting fee, donation...).

Probably several hundreds of dollars on chess books alone. Then my annual Diamond Memberships (about $300) and about a two hundred on chess sets. It's only money. I know people who spend more than that on cigarettes.

baddogno

A few grand maybe, mostly on sets, boards, books, and Diamond.  Cheap enough as hobbies go.  Just compare it to golf or skiing or photography.

Horace

Less than on cameras and fountain pens.  WAY less than I used to spend on golf ;-)

Toohey_Dee

My Gold Membership, a small inexpensive chess set and a used copy of Silman's The Amateur's Mind. About $35.00.

Not even a single buck... my parents won't let me buy anything... but maybe after 2 weeks I'll have a chessboard... maybe on my birthday... maybe....

Seems to me you are playing for free now ,are you not? Wether you win or not remains in your hands.

One of my close friends played in the World Open U1400 section a couple of years ago and tied three-ways for first place and won $4,750. Needless to say, he is now “up for life” on his chess expenses. Must be nice...
santiagomagno15

3000? thats a lot, I would like to spend more, it is impossible to go to most of the tournaments because those are in other cities and I can afford them, I spend well my diamond membership, some lessons and the few tournaments that I can go in my city so not that much

Chesserroo2

Likely less than $200.

Corbellino

probably about $150 total...u but you get what you pay for 😬
