It depends on your IQ, haha. I don't believe people can get to 2000 without having a pretty high IQ in the first place. That kind of rating requires a lot of calculation and cunning , not to mention memorising hundreds of lines. On Blitz, you'll also benefit from playing very fast.

I'm sitting at my current blitz peak of 2079, and I have improved faster than just about anyone I've ever seen. But, I would be willing to bet that I would score horribly on an IQ test. I don't think there is any correlation whatsoever

The question is common, especially in martial arts. I don’t know how many times people would come in and ask how quick can they get a blackbelt. It doesn’t work that way. Like in Chess, there are patterns that have to be learned and built upon, in order to progress.

Are you a working adult or not?  If yes, I would say probably not lol

i'm at freshman highschool rn

That's a good time to play and get well at chess.  You part of a school chess team?  That would help - to learn and compete.  I wish you good luck.

I’ve only been playing Chess for 6 months, and my puzzle rating is higher than yours. 1503!!!!

Not anymore happy.png, I just solved a few.

Chess.com allows you to reset your history, which I do every now and then, so I started back at 800, got a few puzzles correct and reached 1400 and stopped. My real rating in puzzles has been close to 2600

My blitz rating is 1150-1200 right now and i have been playing chess for little bit less than 3 month. how much work is gonna needed to reach 2000 in 6 month or is it possible

I don't believe such a gain, in such a short amount of time, is humanly possible (sorry to say).

If you're a prodigy, you might be able to hit 2000 in 1 to 2 years (and that's incredibly fast).

For the rest of us mortals, you're looking at 3 years or more.

You would get a very high score on an IQ test (top 10% without a doubt). No way can you be that good at a game as complex as chess and not be able to do the similar puzzles that a typical IQ test sets you (with far more time I might add).

I have about a dozen friends in my friend list who learned chess in recently and actually reached 2000+ rating within a few weeks/ months.

Unfortunately,  chess.com banned them. Lol.

Haha, exactly!

150-200 rating points  gain each year is very very good, definitely above an average ,  so if you are 1200 blitz now and want to reach 2000 blitz you can count for yourself.

Avatar of ChrisZifo
Absolutely, and I will add (as I have earlier) that only people with a high IQ, good memory and the ability to think fast are likely to reach 2000 , REGARDLESS of how long they try.
Many people on chess.com have played thousands of games and have not improved that to that level. I should know, I am one of them. 2000 is in the top 99% of all chess players, and is no easy task to achieve.

Hmmm: I am pretty sure I heard Naka tell in one of his streams that his IQ was 102, so that kind of puts some comments here to the test...

Think of it this way:

How long does it take an average person to learn how the pieces move?

How long to learn notation?

How long to learn opening theory?

Keep adding up each of the pieces, and it is easy to see why there are no shortcuts when learning Chess.

People vastly underestimate the amount of work it takes to get to such a rating. 6 Months from 1100-1300 to 2000 would be an insane achievement.

Even if you are extremely talented, it's just unrealistic and to rush improvement like that can ruin the game for you. Be patient. A big reason some people don't improve is that they are impatient.

From all your posts and comments you seem like a really intelligent person and I highly doubt you would score horribly. It's just humble of you to say that. But you have some of that genius-juice flowing in your veins.

I didn't think it was possible for people to go from 1200 to 2000 in a single year, although I got proven wrong by a few members on this forum.

Still, I think 6 months is unrealistic. And 1 year is only possible if you work incredibly hard and have some natural talent for the game.

For me personally: it took me 2 years just to go from 1700 to 2000.

May i prove you wrong
