Nine or thereabouts. I was fascinated by the Fischer-Spassky match. I remember teaching myself the rules of the game from an encyclopaedia.

Learned when I was 7, came back when I was 12, started being serious when I was 13 or 14.

I started playing chess at 8 years old joining the late great Mike Basman's chess for schools group, I went on to win eventually the British under 16s and played for my local county and league, my uncle was my idol and was a tough player himself once at his peak reaching a BCF rating of 215 (2320 elo) he died aged 88 and could still play a great game even into his late 70s i have his book collection which i fondly play through during my now retirement years.
