I'd say dump the books and stick to the online servers.

CT-art is good, but it is quite advanced, it depends how good you are at tactics.

This is how I solve tactics from books:

First I look at the problem in the diagram, first looking for patterns, and getting in to the position. If I cant find the solution in a few minutes, I set the position up on a real board, moving around with the pieces, to find the solution. If I still cant find the solution after about 10 minutes, I put the book away, and go back to the problem later. When I have found the solution, I write it down in a notebook I have for tactics and endgame studies, and sometimes check the solution in the answers, to be sure im correct, and perfecting if I made a problem wrong.

Do them all. Repeatedly. When you've solved them all, go back and solve them all again and try to do it faster. And then faster. And then faster.

Does anyone ever experience this peculiarity when studying tactical problems---if you dont get the solution in the first couple of minutes---you can look all day long and not get the solution. Either you'll get it in the first couple of minutes or you wont get it at all. You could be going through the problems and knocking them off, left and right, and then come to a problem that you can look at for the rest of the day and come away empty handed. Whats with that? Is there a name for that road block?

Sounds like stereotyped thinking, as it applies to chess?

I saw a post by IM Pruess where he said that you should solve tactics puzzles until you miss three. Go over those three a few times until you understand them. Then don't do any more until the next day. He said that any more than that and it won't stick in your mind. I like books because you can take them anywhere!
