How Should I Train My Son?

When he wins a game, give him a carrot to eat.

When he loses a game, give him a stick to eat.

Stick and carrot, the diet version. Not only making a grandmaster, but also a very healthy diet.

He should be happy if he gets to 2000 by the age of 20.

Unless he has a very low aptitude for the game, he should cross 2000 much sooner.

That was not my statement. Check what Carlsen has to say when someone asks him the same question.

@nimzomalaysian
He was making a little joke about rating the same as age.

@ChessofPlayer
I wouldn't call beginner at 13 to 2000 at age 20 very low aptitude. If you look at chess players in general that's probably closer to average. Yes, some are 2500 by then, but these players are less than 1%

I'm not so sure about that.

He seems to stifle a chuckle right after he says it and immediately continues the answer with "seriously speaking I think as long as you have an interest, as long as it's fun, you can go far."

I started to play as a young boy and am still enjoying the game now at age 67.  It is a surprisingly sociable game, every team I have ever played in went to the pub together after the match, often enough with the opponents as well.   And I have enjoyed going to chess clubs in any number of countries, whether when living there or just visiting.  If I ever make it to New York it will be to play in Washington Square park and Union Square.

I hope your son gets as much fun from the game as I have.  Sounds like perhaps he will.

@nimzomalaysian That's his goal, to get there by 20.

I thought Google was already a thing when your son was 13.

My 13-year-old has been playing about a year. He's taken to the game and enjoys studying on Chessmaster, reading through chess books & magazines, and, of course, playing.

It's hard for me to get a gauge on his rating. Here he's something like 1100. On Chessmaster he's around 1000. On most rating exams he takes he ends up in the 1400 range.

Here's what I have him doing now: play a bunch, study Sillman's "Reasses" for up to 30 minutes a day, and sporadically study tactics, openings, and end games.

So he really has no formal chess training regimen. I'd like some advise on that. What should his training be like every day? I'd say he has anywhere from 2 to 3 free hours a day to devote to studying chess -- and he has the motivation.

Also, he's asking about how high his rating can eventually go. No idea. I doubt he'd ever be a GM since he didn't start moving pieces when he was 4 years old. I'm thinking maybe he can get up to Class A or Expert, but I don't know. Any thoughts on that as well?

actually, It is quite easy to get to class A within two years at most  (from 1000). I am a class A player (1850 exactly), and it took much less effort than expected. 2000 should not be too far away after that. you will see that even 2100 players are not anywhere close to perfect. Good luck!

Everyone can see I just did a basic troll move. And if they dont, they need help.

BronsteinPawn

Buy him Zurich 1953 and force him to memorize all games. He will go to 2000+ level once he does that.

BronsteinPawn

Ok. You look like a reasonable guy which for some reason takes his chess.com image seriously.

Ill quote you correctly.
