How the Night moves.

The Knights can move two squares in one direction and one square in the other direction; or one square in one direction and two in the other direction; in a 'L' shape movement. But in a book about chess by a Russian Grand Master A.P. Sokolski, "Your First Move," the book shows how  the Knights can move one square up or down or side ways and one square diagonally. It comes to the same thing doesn't it? But I have discovered something else my self. That is the Kights can move one direction diagonally and then one square up or sideways. It also comes to the same thing. Doesn't it. Its great, this game of chess and its rules.Smile

This is the rhythm of the night

Two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally.

You should not call them nights. Knights is ok, but most cool chess players call them Horses. The label knights is a ridiculous fashion trend.

Yes, it is. Smile  The knight's pattern of moving is complicated, and there are several ways of describing it.  I personally prefer the L-shaped, "two spaces in one direction, then one off to the side" explanation.  What about you?

Personally I like to not have to think about it anymore. Just stare at the pattern long enough and perceiving it becomes instinctual.  It is odd but not complicated.

Ive always pictured the knight move as one square bishop, one square rook, any direction, any order
