The comments buffle me... is there any other way to play chess? are you playing pieces at random or according to a picture you had in memory on where a piece was in a similar position that you won sometime?lol

He basically just says to check for the squares your pieces can go and start calculating variations a few moves deep on the most promising ones if you found nothing then choose an other piece and do the same lol

I think so, too.  The steps that are similar, as in Dan Heisman's book, quickly eliminate pieces that haven't been moved/uncovered and simplify the checking routines.
