How To Become A More Exciting Player?

Sort:

My contemporaries have cunningly compared my style to a Boa Constrictor. I squeeze, I wear down my opponent, only playing a move when it's sound, waiting for a mistake.  My superior positional understanding allows me to do this. Once my opponent makes an inaccuracy, I squeeze some more. And like this over and over, until the end game. This is where I thrive, and defeat opponents with my pass pawn.

However, this is not the reputation I want to have. Does my strategy win me games? Sure. But, this is not the Chess player I imagined I would be. I want to be compared to the likes of Tal, Morphy, and Karpov, not a boring positional player like Shirov.

So I have to ask the community. How do I change my style, and use my vast understanding of positional play to become a more exciting, tactical player?

Uuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, shirov, boring?

Shirov isn't that boring. But if you really want to be more exciting, play more e4 openings, only a small amount of openings that start with e4 are boring, namely the Petroff, Giuco and Ruy Lopez, but even the Petroff and Ruy can be tactical(see Petroff Cochrane Gambit). The Sicilian and Scandi are fun and so are hypermodern openings like Pirc, Modern and Gruenfeld. These openings are more about tactics so I play them more than d5. Also gambits like the King's Gambit are fun, especially the Muzio

I exclusively play e4. I have too much class to play cheap tricks like d4.

^^This is a troll post right? You just black a free queen. Only a terribly inept player would lose that game to white...

Yes, a "free" Queen. Which can easily be trapped and eliminated by simply playing Bb2!!

Like I said. The position for white practically plays itself.

Thanks for the posting that instructive game Butcher Bill. I am a big fan of Gambits. I actually wrote about them here: https://www.chess.com/blog/VladimirHerceg91/the-chess-gambit-use-it-or-lose-it

Karpovs style was compared to that of a boa constrictor.

Great blog post Vladimirherceg91 you should write more.

I don't usually have the time to write. But thank you for the friendly comment. I try to write a thread once in a blue moon though in order to spur intellectual chess discussion.

I do have one problem with the gambit posted though. Bishop's dark square bishop has an open diagonal which could be dangerous in the end game if it becomes a big pawn.

But according to my calculations, if both sides play accurately, this position here should be about equal.

This isn't a damn vlog answer the fucking question

"But according to my calculations, if both sides play accurately, this position here should be about equal."

To use a different quote: "Aye, there's the rub."  Without enough actual knowledge to know for sure, I think the "if both sides play accurately" applies to all all openings.  But, both sides usually do not play accurately, therefore one side or the other wins most games and only a few end in draws.  (I'm assuming "accurately" is the same as "without mistakes.")   Part of the intriguing nature of chess comes from the reality that sooner or later one of the players deviates from the "book" and when that deviation is actually a "mistake" there is no guarantee the the other player will be able to capitalize on the mistake, so the "mistake" can and often enough does turn out to lead to a win for the one who made the "mistake."

Play b2, Qxa2...the queen is not trapped, even Qxb2 is good for black...I'll take the rook and bishop and 3 pawns for one original pawn any day, can't mate with the second queen still there anyways if black is not a total idiot....

OP, if you are playing positional chess you are doing it right, you will improve more over time....do something else for excitement.....martial arts, scuba diving, race cars, skydiving, etc....

Nope, the answer is to consider not castling, castling sometimes optional, and push some frickin' pawns man!  You can jam your opponent and make them reconsider whatever plans they have, with some pawns bearing down on them!  Take it from me, I have gotten multiple compliments from opponents regarding the exciting games I have created for the both of us.   I am probably the most exciting player on chess.com

You could try only playing chess with scorpions on the board? If that will transform your repution into Morphy-like proportions I'm not sure, but it will surely do *something* for your image!

You won't hear any disagreement from me. Chess.com is lucky to have you.

I disagree. That title rightfully belongs to Marcobr444, also known as the King of Patzers.

Right? People who don't understand that Chess is life just don't get it.
