How to become CM

@Pfren has inspired me to create this thread. There are a lot of childish and stupid threads talking about becoming GM when they still hang pieces.

I believe I can make it to GM if my parents feed me and give me a roof to live under for the following 10 years, but that is another story.

Right now I think CM is a pretty achievable goal, at least for me.

So how do I become a CM?

Are there any CMs or NMs that can share with us the books or training methods that helped them? How long it took for them and if they had a coach?

I think I could be CM by the end of 2017, what do you think? Should I give up on chess because I hang too many stuff? Am I underestimating the task of becoming a CM?

Thanks in advance to all of you who participate in this HOPEFULLY WONDERFUL THREAD.

Ok. So Ill guess I will start myself.

I recently, on November played 3 games with an IM because I was and still am interested in taking his lessons. He told me I needed to improve my strategy and pawn play.

I like game collection formats, do you know of any game collection that would improve my pawn play and general strategy?

BronsteinPawn

I've heard wonders about Botvinnik's 100 Games collection and how he said everyone who aspired chess mastery should read his book, should I start with that one?

Would studying Karpov games (reading his "My best games move") be helpful at my level?

Ziggy_Zugzwang

I don't want to be a CM or an NM....

Good topic, BP!
I have no doubt that you can make CM and you know I wouldn't say that if I didn't believe it.
I'm curious as to your age and if you've played in an OTB tournament yet.
ArgoNavis

Which are the requirements to get the CM title?

Just reaching 2200 FIDE.

BronsteinPawn

Wait, you are just 9 min old. Lol.

It is interesting that a lot of good chess players are Jewish tho. But that is not the TOPIC!

15.

Only had played in 2 OTB tournaments in all my life.

BronsteinPawn

I mean. I dont want to sound cocky, but I also believe I can make it to CM.

I would even go as far as saying that if I were to pay a good coach, like the IM which I played with, I could maybe reach FM in 1 and a half years, maybe 2 at worst.

There is something about chess that makes me feel I was made to play it, I used to code before, and even tho I was decent for my inexperience I couldnt understand that easily some concepts. Specially when it cames to accesing different classes and creating methods that returned stuff in Java, but when I read a chess book I feel like I understand whatever I read from the first try.

BronsteinPawn

However Im interested in what people think should be priorities to become CM.

I believe that my weakest part is my calculation. I have a decent tactical rating according to my standars (1950 on ChessTempo standard and 2200~ in chess.com) but I cant really see that deep if I dont hover my mouse over the pieces as if I were moving them.

BronsteinPawn

I guess to work on calculation I just need to cut my hands off and start calculating without hovering the mouse as if I were moving the pieces?

Damn you're young.

I never actually *studied* their games but I felt I got a lot out of the games of Petrosian and Karpov when positional play and prophylaxis were a mystery to me.

But who am I to give you advice?
BronsteinPawn

Yes. Im young. Lol.

I have never looked at Petrosian games. I'll take a look at them. I have always seen a book called "Python Strategy" which talks about Petrosian, Im gonna try to get it.

Wow. What a sarcastic and childish thread. Why do you hate on people with goals? You were a beginner once, and just because you haven't put in the necessary work to get to the top, doesn't mean we will make the same mistakes.

Wut? Im not hating on them. Im making fun of them.

Thinking about being a GM when you are not even a CM is risky. For once it is delusional, because you are dreaming, you have no clear way of getting there (at least at the moment) and you are also asking to get your dreams, confidence and self-steem crushed if you dont reach GM.

BronsteinPawn

2Q1C, you are talking non-sense. I never said I was making fun of beginners. I myself was a beginner once, so it would be stupid. However Im making fun of people with weird fetishes and delusions of becoming a GM out of nowhere.
